"Concrete 101" -
Technical/Product Knowledge, Module I

Module I: Technical Product Knowledge (24 hours) – Recommended for any non-technical personnel needing a general background in concrete.

NRMCA Suggests participants practice basic math skills used in the workshop before class begins, sample online problems available.

SESSION 1: Fundamental of Concrete
An overview of concrete, including its properties and basic components, the properties required for plastic and hardened concrete, and the variables that influence the quality of concrete. An in-depth review of the ACI Publication E-701 as it pertains to concrete's component materials: Portland cement, aggregates, water, air and cementitious materials.

SESSION 2: Component Materials of Concrete
An introduction to admixtures and an explanation of their purpose. Explores air entraining and water reducing admixtures, accelerators and retarders, as well as other "value added" admixtures. Also covers synthetic fibers.

SESSION 3: Proportioning Concrete Basics; Pre-Placement Conference
Understanding the basics of proper mix designs and the properties needed for quality mix proportioning. An overview of the salesperson's role in specifications review and mix design submittals. Pre-placement conference: why they are critical, who is involved and the benefits associated with them.

SESSION 4: Batching, Mixing and Delivery
An exploration of ready mixed concrete types, ASTM C 94 requirements, the benefits of using ready mixed concrete, how specifications for concrete are determined, the requirements for remixing concrete and the preparations necessary for product delivery. Includes yield, tolerances in slump and entrained air, batch control systems, batch plants, concrete inspection and testing.

SESSION 5: Handling, Placing and Finishing and Curing Concrete
An overview of the proper methods and procedures used in consolidating and finishing concrete. Covers transporting, forms, placement tips, concrete conveying devices, and curing concrete, as well as precautions for hot and cold weather concreting.

SESSION 6: Basic Concrete Troubleshooting
Provides the basics of troubleshooting concrete slabs, such as workability, place-ability, finish-ability, and the problems associated with cracking, crazing, and dusting. Also covers troubleshooting yield and provides an introduction to troubleshooting concrete strengths.
